History & Profile

The Townsville Chamber of Commerce, formed in 1882, is the largest regional chamber in Australia. With a membership of over 650, it is also the largest in the country per head of population. These impressive achievements reflect not only the diversity of membership but the considerable strength and vision of Townsville's pro-active, dynamic busineses community.

The ten members who volunteer to be part of the Chamber Executive each year undertake the role of an independent, apolitical voice to administer, promote and achieve the objectives set down by the membership as part of the organisation's business plan.

As the "champion of the business community," the Chamber deals with a vast range of issues ranging from day to day business opportunities/problems through to regional infrastructure and community affairs.

Our main aim is to service our membership by providing a platform to communicate and network. Members' monthly luncheons with high profile guest speakers are always well supported, but as some members can't attend, we also have "meet the member'' evening functions where members can mix and mingle with other colleagues. Our annual Golf Day is always a major social event.

Seminars/workshops are in high demand and organised to educate and inform members on current issues. Workshops on improving business knowledge and business planning are also on the agenda.

In order to redress the imbalance between young and mature members, the Chamber has a "Young Chamber" comprising younger business people catering to their colleagues' needs. This Network operates wholly under the aegis of the Chamber and is seen as an essential investment in the health of the greater Townsville business community.
