EXTRACT FROM PRESIDENTS REPORT AT 127TH AGM

John Carey as newly elected President thanked Craig for his tremendous contribution to the Chamber .
John thanked members for being members and for continuing to be members. He undertook to engage with the membership during his time as President so that the strength of the Chamber and its relevance to business activities is maintained.

Some of the benefits to membership are:
Opportunities to network with over 600 like-minded business owners;
Opportunities to receive information about training, government assistance and other important community events relevant to your business; and
Particularly in tough financial times opportunities for support in the survival and growth of your business.

Other benefits include the lobbying done by the Chamber to ensure the continued health of the economy of this region.

For example:
The Chamber has taken, over the last few years, a leading role in agitating for the revitalisation of the CBD and in particular, Flinders Street.
The Townsville Chamber of Commerce has recently appointed a Development Executive.
The Chamber has contributed time and money to the recent report issued by the Economic Recovery Task Force led by Townsville Enterprise.
The Chamber works very closely with Townsville Enterprise and, at that organisation’s discretion, has a place on its board and on its strategic advisory committee for economic development.
The Chamber has a position on the North Queensland Development Alliance, a group consisting of representatives from Burdekin, Hinchinbrook and Charters Towers Councils, the State Government and the Chambers of Commerce of those regions which meets quarterly to set a strategic direction to address the economic and social imperatives for this region.

The Chamber believes that upgrading the Townsville to Mt Isa rail line is of vital importance to the Townsville and greater regional community.

The Chamber’s final group of stakeholders are the elected representatives at all levels of Government in this region.  The 620 members have charged the Chamber with lobbying and liaising  on a range of issues to ensure the best possible outcome for this region.  By communicating with and engaging with our membership and other stakeholders, the Chamber’s continued relevance to the community will be preserved.

RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THE ECONOMIC RECOVERY REPORT

The Queensland Government place greater emphasis on utilising project delivery methods that encourage regional contractors and suppliers to tender for projects in their region.

The Queensland Government and Local Councils review the size of tender packages (unbundling) to enable regional contractors and suppliers to tender directly to the agency or council. This strategy should encourage regional employers to retain staff and grow their business thus prompting the need for regional based expertise in specialist fields such as Project Managers, Construction Managers, Cost Planners, Schedulers etc.

The Queensland Government implement a state wide procurement training and education program for all agencies and councils. This program would focus on the following:

  • Maximising regional engagement through the unbundling of large packages.
  • Analysing the internal financial costs of risk shedding against risk sharing (managing smaller projects as opposed to singular large projects).
